After the stabilization of the front in March 1943, the most important task for the leadership of the USSR in preparation for the summer campaign was the development and implementation of measures, taking into account combat experience, to improve the organizational and staff structure of artillery and provide it with new types of weapons as one of the key elements in solving large-scale tasks in both defense and offensive. The article presents the decisions and activities of the military and political leadership of the USSR on this issue on a broad basis of archival material, as well as analyzes the state and number of artillery fronts operating in the Kursk Bulge by the beginning of July 1943. The statistical material provided by the departments of artillery commanders and the staffing department of the Central and Voronezh Fronts also allows us to establish the number of their artillery groups and the density of artillery in the areas where the Wehrmacht struck on July 5, 1943, to assess the forecast of the Soviet command during the development of the Kursk defensive operation.
