The article examines the first years of Venezuela’s independence after the collapse of the confederation of Great Colombia and the election of J. A. Paez as President of independent Venezuela. The article examines the military-political conflicts in Venezuela in the early years of its existence and the reasons for the victories and defeats of H.A. Paez in them. The controversial figure of Paez, who was negatively evaluated in the Soviet historical school, nevertheless plays a significant role in the process of political formation of independent Venezuela, and the study of how and why J.A. Paez became one of the military leaders of the liberation movement under the leadership of S. Bolívar, and then, having broken with S. Bolívar, turned out to be the first political leader of independent Venezuela, is a prerequisite for an objective view of the history of Venezuela, a view free from ideological criticism, but also free from apologetics, which was inherent in many studies, both in the West and in Venezuela itself. A consistent review of the facts of the biography of the first Venezuelan president provides a basic phatology for a scientific historical analysis of the events of the initial stage of the history of this country.
