The article reconstructs the image of Vietnam in the mid-1970s and mid–1980s, reflected in travel essays by Soviet journalists. It is noted that in the first years after the fall of Saigon, the image of Vietnam differed depending on the region of the author’s residence. The image captured by the results of a trip to the North was formed from impressions of a heroic country that had won the war against foreign invaders and successfully established a peaceful life. The image compiled as a result of a visit to South Vietnam was dominated by components related to the economic successes achieved in the process of implementing socialist reforms. It is indicated that in the first half of the 1980s, the image previously characteristic of the essays compiled as a result of their stay in the South, as a whole, became applicable nationwide. The author provides a critical analysis of individual facts and judgments presented in travel essays. It is concluded that the disadvantages of travel essays as a historical source are primarily due to the fact that Soviet journalists perceived Vietnam as a fraternal socialist country and did not set themselves the task of bringing the problems in the country to the general public.
