The article analyses the concepts of the new science of art by the twentieth-century Austrian art historian Hans Siedlmayr Following the tradition of Heidegger ’s and Gadamer ’s hermeneutics, Siedlmayr approaches the interpretation or understanding of an individual work ofart in the context of ontology. It is not a thing, in his understanding, but a phenomenon of the truth of being. It appears to man and is made available for contemplation, in an act of re-creation or interpretation in which the division between subject and object disappears. The act of appearing is divided into the external, the sensual (Erscheinung) and the spiritual, i.e., connected with speculation (Gestalt). The phenomenon comes from the origin (Ursprung), i.e., from being. Siedlmayr, following Hegel, understands the work of art not as an aesthetic object, but as a means of cognition of the absolute spirit
