В статье рассмотрены проблемные вопросы статистического учета крымского населения накануне и в первые десятилетия после присоединения Крыма к Российской империи. Данные проблемы имеют особую важность в связи с историографическими интерпретациями эмиграционного движения крымских татар. Подробно разобраны работы А. Озенбашлы – одного из самых цитируемых авторов в западной и турецкой исторической литературе. Показаны ошибки в его миллионных расчетах населения Крыма в указанный период. Схожий разбор предпринят в отношении современной статьи Н. С. Сейтягъяева, предложившего новое обоснование к завышенным оценкам населения полуострова. Кроме того, обращено внимание на фактические и логические ошибки и несоответствия в работах первых публикаторов «Камерального описания Крыма» – А. А. Скальковского, Ф. Ф. Лашкова, а также ведомости 1793 г., опубликованной П. С. Палласом, что во многом стало причиной последующих искажений статистических данных о жителях полуострова в историографии.Сделан вывод о позитивной динамике роста татарского населения Крыма после присоединения к Российской империи. Согласно данным О. А. Игельстрома, в 1783 г. в Крыму проживало около 115 000 чел., главным образом, крымских татар. К 1795 г. количество жителей составило уже 156,4 тыс. чел. (из них 137 тыс. крымских татар). В самом начале XIX в. крымских татар, по разным оценкам, насчитывалось от 70 до 95 тыс. мужского пола, т.е. при минимальном значении – около 130–140 тыс. чел.обоего пола. К 1816 г. это количество увеличилось до 182,7 тыс., а в 1850 г. достигло 267,4 тыс. чел. В связи с чем, утверждение о глобальной эмиграции татарского населения из Крыма в первые десятилетия российского правления не верно. Даже 80 000 мигрантов не могли незаметно и неучтенно покинуть полуостров после 1783 г. Основной эмиграционный поток конца XVIII века следует относить к дороссийскому периоду истории Крыма, когда внутренние междуусобицы в Крымском ханстве, спровоцированные российско-турецким соперничеством в регионе, вынуждали местное население массово покидать полуостров.
